Past experiences can continue to affect how you feel, think, respond, and relate to others long after the experience itself has ended. I provide trauma and EMDR therapy in Branson, MO for adults and adolescents. As a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice since 2008, I help clients understand the impact of difficult experiences, develop practical ways to manage distress, and work toward healing from the experiences that continue to affect their lives. How Trauma Can Continue to Affect You
Trauma does not look the same for everyone. Sometimes it follows a clearly identifiable event. Other times, its effects develop through repeated painful, frightening, stressful, or difficult experiences. You may notice: Anxiety or feeling constantly on alert Strong emotional reactions or feeling easily triggered Distressing memories that seem difficult to put in the past Avoiding people, places, conversations, or situations connected to what happened Difficulty trusting others Shame, guilt, or negative beliefs about yourself Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected Difficulty relaxing or feeling safe Relationship difficulties connected to past experiences Repeating patterns that you understand intellectually but still find difficult to change Trauma counseling can help you understand these responses while developing healthier ways to respond to thoughts, emotions, memories, and triggers.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a trauma-focused psychotherapy designed to help the brain process distressing experiences and memories that may continue to cause emotional distress. Emdria International Association has a great video explaining more about EMDR here https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/ During EMDR, you focus on aspects of a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or another form of alternating stimulation. The goal is not to erase the memory. Instead, EMDR is intended to help the experience become less emotionally overwhelming and allow more adaptive beliefs and responses to develop. EMDR has been extensively studied for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is recognized as an evidence-based trauma treatment. I am trained in EMDR and incorporate it into counseling when it is appropriate for the client, their goals, and their individual needs.
Do I Have to Tell Every Detail?
EMDR does not usually require you to describe every painful detail of what happened. We will discuss enough for me to understand what you are experiencing, while moving at a pace that feels manageable and appropriate for you.
How Trauma Therapy Can Help
Trauma can affect anxiety, self-worth, relationships, trust, emotional reactions, and the way you respond to certain situations. Depending on your needs, trauma counseling may include EMDR and other strategies to help you: Understand triggers and emotional responses Reduce the impact of distressing memories Develop coping and grounding skills Change negative beliefs connected to past experiences Improve emotional regulation and relationships Move forward without the past having the same influence over your present
Christian Counseling and Trauma
For clients who desire it, Christian faith and biblical values can be incorporated into trauma counseling. Faith integration is always based on your preferences and goals.
