FAQ

Common Questions

1. Do I really need counseling? I can normally handle my own problems.

I understand that you may feel capable of handling your own problems, and that’s commendable. Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully passed through other difficulties you’ve faced, there’s nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it. Seeking counseling is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of self-awareness and the willingness to seek additional support when needed that is something to be respected. You are taking responsibility by accepting where you’re at in life and making a commitment to change the situation for the better by seeking counseling.Counseling provides long-lasting benefits and support. It’s an opportunity to gain valuable insights, tools, and guidance to overcome challenges and create positive change in your life.

2. How long do sessions last?

Sessions are 45-50 minutes long. If needed, we can meet for longer sessions or for multiple sessions during the week to meet your specific needs.

3. How long does counseling usually take?

The length of our work together depends on what your goals are and how much prior experience you have working with your concerns. We can better address the question of how much counseling is needed for you as we continue to work together.
My experience is that your results depend on the depth of your commitment to the work. Once you decide that counseling seems useful, the results often come more quickly. The effort you put in will be one of the most valued investments in your life.

4. What is counseling like?

Every counseling session is unique and accommodates to each individual and their particular goals. It is standard for counselors to discuss the primary issues and concerns in your life during counseling sessions. It is common to schedule a series of weekly sessions, where each session lasts around fifty minutes. Counseling can be short-term, focusing on a specific issue, or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth.

There may be times when you are asked to take certain actions outside of the counseling sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records to track certain behaviors. For counseling to be most beneficial you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. People seeking counseling are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards self-transformation and create greater awareness in their lives. Here are some things you can expect out of counseling:
• Compassion, respect, and understanding
• Perspectives to provide light of persistent patterns and negative feelings
• Valuable strategies for enacting positive change
• Useful and proven techniques along with practical guidance

5. Is your counseling Biblical?

Your faith is an significant aspect of who you are, and I respect that! In fact, my counseling integrates biblical principles as well as the findings of scientific research.
If you prefer to keep your counseling sessions secular, that’s not a problem either. I will always do what’s best for you in assisting you to reach your goals in a manner that you are most comfortable with.
The counseling is about you and for you, not about us. Our only agenda is to help you.

6. What is your cancellation policy?

If you do not show up for your scheduled counseling appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the session.
It is the fairest way for us to respect each other’s time.

The law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and counselor. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client. Rest assured that I take confidentiality seriously and prioritize your well-being.
However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule.
Exceptions include:
• A suspicion of child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The counselor is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
• A client threatens serious bodily harm to another person. The counselor is required to notify the police.
